¹⁷ Now the king had put the officer on whose arm he leaned in charge of the gate, and the people trampled him in the gateway, and he died,^(A) just as the man of God had foretold when the king came down to his house.

¹⁹ When evening shadows fell on the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath,^(A) I ordered the doors to be shut and not opened until the Sabbath was over. I stationed some of my own men at the gates so that no load could be brought in on the Sabbath day.

²² Then I commanded the Levites to purify themselves and go and guard the gates in order to keep the Sabbath day holy.
